Parkrun

Parkrun Results – 29th July 2023

After the downpour at EVRC earlier in the week, the sun came out to treat 42 Striders to a lovely bit of dry weather on Saturday as they ran across 10 parkrun events up and down the country.

There was a fantastic turnout for tourist week with 15 Striders taking on the winding paths of Bramshall Road parkrun in Uttoxeter. Amongst the 122 runners who took part you were never far from someone in the blue and white stripes with plenty of opportunities to cheer each other on at the many cross-over points of the 3 lap course. There were 12 of us there as first timers, meaning plenty of new course PBs set, and we had a string of great age group results too with Hazel Baxter, Sally Cartwright, Hannah Cartwright, Amanda Wilson and Jamie Atkinson all coming top in their age categories.

Elsewhere we had runners at parkruns across the UK. Closer to home we had James Cunningham at Long Eaton, and Richie Wheatcroft setting a brilliant new PB of 22:01 at Shipley.

11 Striders took on Markeaton Park where we had an impressive 1-2 finish from Martin Kerr and Andy MacEwen, plus a fantastic new PB for James Realy coming in at 20:21.

At Alvaston we had 3 Striders in the top 10 in Paul Pearce, Liam Regan and Brian Thomas, with Liam putting in a great performance to run a new PB of 18:13. Margaret Cowling also finished top of the VW70-74 category in 34:46 – great running Margaret!

Further afield, Chris Halliday ran at Sandall Park in Doncaster, Jonny Branch at Abingdon in Oxfordshire, and while Eamonn Hughes swapped camera duties for a run down south at Hampstead Heath, just 570ish miles to the north, Patrick Munro was finishing 6th at Alness in Scotland.

As a club we do get around a bit, and there are 760 parkruns in the UK for us to choose from. According to Power of 10, the UK’s hardest parkrun is Great Yarmouth North Beach, which our very own Steve Randle ran this week. Not only was Steve the first Strider to take on the course, braving the sand and wind, but he also bagged a top 20 finish coming in 19th in 32:00. It shows just how tough it was that Steve’s warm-up on the sea front was nearly a full minute per mile faster than the actual parkrun! Well done Steve on setting Shelton Striders’ fastest hardest parkrun time, hopefully you’ve got all the sand out of your shoes!

Brilliant running this week everyone and big thanks to any Striders who took the time to volunteer this week.

On a final note, having stumbled across some parkrun stats this week it was interesting to see just how many times we have run parkruns as a club…

170 Striders have run 5320 parkruns at Markeaton.
117 Striders have run 1844 parkruns at Alvaston.
114 Striders have run 1382 parkruns at Long Eaton.

…If you add all that up that’s 8546 parkruns and 42,730kms between us just from 3 local parkruns. That means as a club we’re now just into our 2nd lap of the Earth (40,075 km)!
